Prepare yourself before entering the temple.
It is essential to take bath, wear neat clothes, wear tilak based on the sampradaya/path you follow. It makes more clear to have tilak at 12 places. The significance would be dealt in detail later.

As soon as we reach the main doors of the temple, if we see dwarapalakas [gate keepers], please pay obeisances to them and request them [mentally] to allow you enter into the temple, then we need to tap the door gently intending our wish to enter it.

Remembering Guru [if you've] and crave for his blessings to help you to be so humble to everyone and for having darshan of the Lord.

To keep a balanced mind, we start with the first and foremost diety of that sampradaya/path and request HIM to shower HIS blessings on you to help you maintain utmost serenity in temple with pure mind.

Utter mantra/sloka/hyms that pertains to that Lord.

Follow the same when approaching each and every diety in the temple. This prepares us slowly to keep our mind fully engrossed to have darshan/view/see the main diety.

How to Memorize Pasurams?

The simple and best way is to have a proper guru and learn through his blessings. Those who wish to memorize the valuable slokas, songs of Alwars and don't find time to spare, the possible way is to record them and play it while driving, put the collection in an ipod and listen at leisure, travelling, etc. Listen to lectures of learned people who can explain the meaning of each pasurams. One of the pasurams is given below for easy understanding and to kindle interest to learn them. If a person knows 'Tamil' language, he/she can understand it with more ease.

Seeyan - Near
Aniyan - Far
Siriyan - Smallest
Miga - Very
Periyan - Big [Biggest]
Aayan - who takes care of cows
thuvaraikon - Dwarakai Kon - Dwaraka is a place, Kon means King
Mayan - Creater of all
Androthiye - Andru Voodhiye - Said on that day
Vaak - Word/Gita
Adanai Kalaar - those who don't/didn't read
Ulagil - In the world
Ethilaram - None
Meignanamil - he/she can attain.
